Day 1: Prague’s Old Town Square, Charles Bridge And Lesser Town

Explore Prague’s Old Town

On day 1 of your 2-day Prague itinerary start the morning off by heading to Prague’s Old Town. Prague’s Old Town is the center of the city and is filled with history that goes all the way back to the 12th century. There are many cafes, street vendors, markets, historic medieval buildings, stunning iconic landmarks, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Check out the Church of Our Lady before Tyn. This church is one of Prague’s most famous landmarks and it is a true fairytale-like building, such a stunning piece of historical architecture. After exploring the wonderful church climb the Old Town Hall Tower which offers one of the best panoramic views in Prague. From here you can see all of Old Town Square, the beautiful Prague Castle, and all of Prague. The Old Town Hall also has a medieval chapel that you can look at and beautiful historic halls and rooms.

Another impressive church to visit in Old Town Square is St. Nicholas Church. This is a hidden gem in Prague and is an architectural masterpiece with beautiful frescos on the inside, a stunning chandelier, and is now used as a concert hall.

Prague’s Astronomical Clock

Before you leave the Old Town Square you need to check out the famous Astronomical Clock. This is one of the most popular landmarks in Prague and is definitely a must-see. The Astronomical Clock is located on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall building. This medieval clock is one of the oldest astronomical clocks in the world and it has been working since 1410. Super cool!

There are many aspects of the Astronomical Clock that make it so fascinating. The astronomical dial shows the time, the sun’s movement, the moon’s phases, and the time zone. The Apostles and the moving figures put on a mechanical show every hour from 9 AM to 11 PM. And last,y the calendar dial shows the current day, month, and zodiac sign. Such a unique and fascinating landmark.

Explore The Jewish Quarter (Josefov)

For the afternoon take a walk through the Jewish Quarter located between the Old Town Square and the Vltava River. Prague’s Jewish Quarter is one of the most significant Jewish Districts in all of Europe. There are many synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the history of the Jewish community, and more.

First, visit the Old Jewish Cemetery which is one of the oldest Jewish Cemeteries in the world that goes back to the 1400s. The Cemetery is known to be haunted with more than 100,000 people buried here. Next head to the stunning Spanish Synagogue, which has beautiful gold and blue interiors, Arabic style patterns, amazing stained glass, and today it is a part of Jewish history. This synagogue holds classical music concerts from time to time. Next, explore the Old-New Synagogue which is the oldest synagogue built in 1270. This synagogue is a one-of-a-kind piece of Medieval Gothic architecture and has lots of historical significance. Lastly, visit the Jewish Museum of Prague to see amazing exhibits on Jewish traditions, stunning artifacts, and information on the Holocaust.

Charles Bridge

Next, walk over to the famous Charles Bridge. The Charles Bridge connects the Old Town (Stare Mesto) to the Lesser Town (Mala Strana) crossing over the Vltava River. There are lots of features on the Charles Bridge that are worth a second look. The Gothic Bridge Towers at either end of the bridge are something to admire. You could also climb to the top to see beautiful views of Prague. Take a look at the 30 Baroque Statues and Sculptures that line the bridge. The most famous ones include the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the Statue of St. Luthgard, and the Statue of the Holy Crucifix and Calvary.

There are also street performers and artists all over the bridge including musicians, painters, and street performers, making this a lively atmosphere for many to enjoy. A great time to get some photos on the Charles Bridge is at sunrise or sunset, truly stunning.

Visit Kampa Island And The Lennon Wall

After walking along the Charles Bridge walk to Kampa Island which is located in Lesser Town (Mala Strana) right on the other side of the bridge. Kampa Island is also known as “Prague’s Venice” because of all the romantic canals, quiet parks, and amazing views of the Vltava River. You could take a walk along Kampa Park which is filled with beautiful wildlife. A must-see is the Lennon Wall, which is a wall covered in graffiti art that is dedicated to John Lennon and peace. There is also a Yellow Submarine restaurant here where you can enjoy some food and drinks. There is also the Museum Kampa which is filled with works of art by Czech and European artists.

Vltava River Cruise And Dinner In Lesser Town

For the evening of your first day in Prague enjoy a beautiful river cruise along the Vltava River. There are sightseeing river cruises available that last between 1-2 hours and you can also get ones with commentary audio for the best experience. From these cruises you can see the beautiful Prague Castle, Petrin Hill, the Old Town, and of course the Charles Bridge. A great experience, I would definitely recommend it.

After enjoying the Vltava River Cruise head to a beautiful restaurant in Lesser Town to try some traditional Czech food. This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it sits on top of a hill that looks over the Vltava River. The Prague Castle is an architectural masterpiece that is full of fascinating history and is home to Czech Kings, Emperors, and even presidents for thousands of years. Prague Castle Complex consists of beautiful Cathedrals, Royal Palaces, amazing courtyards, and one-of-a-kind city views. Explore the Old Royal Palace which is the Seat of the Bohemian Kings and holds the Vladislav Hall used for medieval coronations. Visit Golden Lane which is a fairytale-like street that has beautiful houses lining the street that used to house castle guards, goldsmiths, and alchemists. St. George’s Basilica is one of Prague’s Oldest Churches. A unique experience is to see the Changing of the Guard Ceremony which happens at the main entrance of the castle every hour. Explore More of Lesser Town (Mala Strana)
